Carrifran is a magnificent ice-carved valley in the Southern Uplands of Scotland between Moffat and Peebles. It extends to more than six square kilometres and has a perimeter of 12km reaching 821m and taking several hours to walk around. Though beautiful, it is almost entirely denuded.
Like much of upland Britain, it has lost its natural woodland cover and many of the wild creatures that depended on it. This ecological tragedy, resulting from a long history of felling, burning and grazing by domestic animals, is as complete as the notorious and more widely appreciated destruction of tropical rainforest by chainsaws.

In addition, our Management plan describes how the restoration is taking place.
